On Monday, June 10th, the Heurich House Museum and the Picnic Theatre Company invite you to enjoy a picnic and garden party theater in the museum’s biergarten, 1921!

This year each meet-up will focus on a different topic and be hosted by a member of the group! The host will pose a series of discussion questions and share their experience on the topic. Of course, all discussions are welcome and encouraged even if they are not on topic! 

This May, during AAPI Heritage month, artist Xena Ni will transform the Heurich House Museum into a portal to the future with her interactive art installation, Good Fortunes. Travel to the future with visionary Asian Americans and return with reasons for hope in the present. Good Fortunes is the second installment of the We Should Talk series, a participatory installation that invites you to join visionary Asian American womxn in imagining and shaping the future, created by Philippa Pham Hughes, Adele Yiseol Kenworthy, and Xena Ni. 

On Wednesday, April 24th from 4:00-8:00pm, celebrate 5 years of our biergarten, 1921, and 130 years of the Heurich House! In the backyard of the historic house, decorate your own garden-themed cupcake, make a birthday card, and learn how you can help support the museum for another 130 years!

As the city blooms for the National Cherry Blossom festival from March 20th to April 14th, celebrate “City in Bloom” in the museum’s biergarten. Our Castle Garden is an oasis from the city featuring dozens of species that bloom all year round - to celebrate the start of spring, enjoy botanical crafts, curated decor, Japanese art, games, and a specially curated bar menu. 

"Did the Brewery close during Prohibition?"

This is one of our most common questions about the Chr. Heurich Brewing Co. The short answer is: No, the company operated for eighty-three uninterrupted years from 1873 until 1956. So it only makes sense that a common follow up question is:

"How?"

On March 1, 2024 from 6-8pm, celebrate the 90th anniversary of the end of Prohibition in DC with a tour, tasting, and opportunity to meet the people that make DC’s local craft beverages. Celebrate the city’s history of bootlegging with Jordan Cotton, owner of DC’s rum distiller, Cotton & Reed, and visit the kitchen to taste a limited-edition cask from Bluejacket brewery. 

If you happened to stop by 1921, a biergarten on the third Wednesday evening of the month during the summer you might have been surprised by what you saw. In addition to the usual craft beverages you might find beads, scissors, mod podge and decorative papers spread across the tables and people chatting away with neighbors they may not have known an hour ago. 

You know what pairs well? Craft Beer + Garden Crafts. This summer at 1921, a Biergarten, join us for a local craft beverage and free crafting every third Wednesday from 4-8pm.

 

From December 1-3, 2023, stroll through the museum’s festive holiday craft market with a Glühwein in hand and find the perfect holiday gifts for your loved ones. This year, Christmas Markt will feature 50+ local small-scale makers, a mini exhibit about our historic revival of the Chr. Heurich Brewing Co.’s Senate Beer, children’s ornament making, tour the historic home decorated for Christmas, and more.

On Saturday, October 21st from 12-4pm join the Heurich House Museum and DC’s Historic Preservation Office (DC HPO) for History in a Bottle: How Historic German Immigrants Used Beer to Claim Citizenship in Washington, DC.

On Friday, October 13th from 6-10pm, join the Heurich House Museum (and Michael) to explore the history of superstitions and learn about Spiritualism through stories of the Heurich family.

A new community gathering in the city: DC’s Emerging Humanities Professionals Meet-up Group!

I had the opportunity to tour Other Half Brewing Company’s brewing facility and taproom in Ivy City. A special thank you to Taproom Manager Matt Splain for showing me around the facility and teaching me the history of the location and Other Half as a whole. 

The Heurich House Museum presents it’s 2nd annual Art All Night: Dupont Circle “Mini Markt” on Saturday, September 30, 2023 from 7pm-midnight in the Museum’s biergarten, 1921. Meet and shop from 10 local artisans and makers while exploring turn-of-the-century DC brewing history in our HOME/BREWED exhibit and enjoying a specially curated menu of beers from DC Brewers’ Guild members.

Liberty Apple Cider is back and the new vintage of Liberty is DRY-HOPPED with Citra, Mosaic, and Nelson* hops for the 1st time in over a century, bringing the recreation that much closer to full historical hoppy accuracy. Celebrate with Heurich House and ANXO at the official release party in the museum’s biergarten on Saturday, June 24th from 5-8pm.

Since the 1970s, Dupont Circle has been one of DC's “gayborhoods." Today, it is home to the Capital Pride block party and parade. Celebrate all month long at 1921, a Biergarten  with Pride beers, rainbow crafts, history from Rainbow History Project, music, and games. Use us as a landing place for pre- and post-parade festivities.

KAMA DC and the Heurich House Museum present an “Immigrant-Owned Mini Markt” on Saturday, July 29th from 3-7 pm in the Museum's biergarten.
