Maerzen is Back, DC!

Researched by Lost Lagers, brewed by Right Proper Brewing Co. in partnership with the Heurich House, with a can design by Mike Van Hall, this century old beer will be available in August.

This August, be the first to taste the newest revival of a historic Heurich Brewery beer: Maerzen!

PLEASE NOTE: This event was postponed to Wednesday, September 18th due to weather. Tickets are still available for purchase. Maerzen is also now available the museum's biergarten and wherever Right Proper beer is sold!

Join the museum for an evening exploring the beer’s history and our modern revival process with Right Proper Brewing Co. and Lost Lagers in the home of historic brewmaster Christian Heurich (1842-1945).

The historic Maerzen recipe comes from a 1933 entry in the notebook of Paul Kaiser, a Master Brewers’ Association of America member and head brewer at the Chr. Heurich Brewing Co. (1872-1956). Maerzen had been advertised in DC newspapers since 1880. Christian writes proudly in his autobiography From My Life, “The Paris World Exhibition of 1900 awarded its silver medal to Heurich’s “Maerzen” and “Senate” beers; Liege in Belgium crowned them in 1905 with a gold medal, and in 1907 Jamestown did likewise with a gold medal.”

The 2024 revival of Maerzen is a public history project led by Kimberly Bender, CEO of the Heurich House Museum, Thor Cheston, Founder & Owner of Right Proper Brewing Co., and Lost Lagers partners, Pete Jones and Mike Stein.
