Christian Heurich, D.C.’s oldest and most successful brewer, created an enduring reputation for himself as an honest and fair businessperson and generous private citizen. The numerous honors and accolades that he received from his peers, his employees, and the community helped to establish his personal and professional brand. This exhibit featured objects from the collections that illustrates Christian Heurich’s success as a brewer, employer, and citizen.

Seven artists examined the immigrant experience in America, a powerful expression in an era when the patriotism of American immigrants is under constant scrutiny. The artists used the interior and exterior spaces of the Heurich House Museum, historic home of 19th century German immigrant Christian Heurich, as backdrop and inspiration. The exhibit drew some of its inspiration from the Heurich family’s own personal experiences of being targeted by anti-German sentiment during WWI. Heurich recalls that painful time in the autobiography he wrote towards the end of this life, saying: “Within my powers, and in so far as an old man was able, I was as good an American as were you.” Several public events will explored the artist works and the ideas surrounding the exhibition. The following artists were featured: Sobia Ahmad, Antonius Bui, Irene Clouthier, Hoesy Corona, Andy Fernandez, Alden Leonard, and Carolina Mayorga. The exhibition is curated by Philippa Hughes, a creative placemaker.
